Every technical area has its vocabulary, and industrial heating is no different. Purger, condensed, heat-conducting mass, classified area: terms that circulate in meetings, proposals and reports, not always have the same meaning for everyone at the table. This glossary brings together the terms that appear in everyday heat tracing projects., explained directly, to align the conversation between operations, maintenance, engineering and purchasing.
Heating systems
Heat trace
Generic name for systems used to maintain or raise the temperature of pipes, tanks, equipment and process lines, compensating for heat loss to the environment. The two large families are the electrical trace and the steam trace.
Electrical trace
Heating system that uses electrical heating cables installed close to piping or equipment. The set also includes a panel, electrical protection and temperature control, dimensioned based on the characteristics of the application, like fluid, maintenance temperature and voltage available in the plant.
Steam dash
System that maintains the temperature of the process line using steam as a heat source. A smaller tube, the tracer tube, accompanies the main piping; steam travels through this tracer and transfers heat to the line, compensating for thermal loss to the environment.
High performance steam tracing (TVAP)
Evolution of the conventional steam trace adopted by Tayga, which uses specific components to maximize heat transfer between the tracer and the piping, increasing system efficiency.
Tracer tube (or tracing tube)
The smaller piping that accompanies the process line and carries the steam into the steam trace system. This is how the heat reaches the main piping.
Heat-conducting mass (HTC)
Compound applied between tracer tube and process piping to eliminate air gaps and create a continuous heat conduction path. It is one of the central elements of the high-performance steam dash, because it multiplies the thermal transfer between the tracer and the line.
Extruded aluminum gutter
Aluminum profile that surrounds the assembly formed by the tracer tube and the thermoconductive mass, maintaining contact and system geometry along the line.
Stainless Steel Band
Fastener that secures the tracing assembly to the process piping, ensuring everything remains in the correct position during operation.
Steam and condensate
Saturated steam
The type of steam most used as a heat source in steam traces. When delivering heat to the process line, it condenses, and it is precisely this change of state that releases the energy that maintains the temperature of the pipe.
Condensed
Water formed when steam gives up heat and changes state. Every steam trace system generates condensate, which needs to be drained correctly and, whenever possible, returned to the system.
Purger
Device responsible for draining condensate from the system without letting steam escape. Drains in poor condition compromise the efficiency of the steam trace, and therefore its inspection is part of the system maintenance routine.
Thermal insulation
Thermal insulation
Protection applied to pipes, tanks, industrial equipment or accessories to control heat exchange with the environment. Serves to reduce temperature loss, protect people from hot surfaces, improve thermal efficiency and reduce energy consumption. No adequate insulation, Both the electric trace and the steam trace lose efficiency.
Ar lakes
Air spaces between surfaces that should exchange heat with each other. How air is a poor thermal conductor, these gaps drastically reduce heat transfer, and eliminating them is one of the central principles of high performance systems.
External finish
The protection that covers the insulation on the outside, defending the insulating material against moisture, impact and bad weather. The most common are aluminum sheet, for general applications, and stainless steel sheets 304 e 316, for humid environments, corrosive or aggressive, such as offshore areas and chemical plants.
Hydrophobic insulation
Moisture resistant insulation. It is a common requirement in external environments or those subject to washing, why wet insulation loses thermal performance.
Removable insulation
Insulation designed to be removed and replaced without destruction, used in valves, flanges and equipment that require periodic maintenance. Allows access to the component without re-insulating with each intervention.
Design and operation
Process Fluid
The material that passes inside the pipe: water, oil, caustic soda, acid or any other product that needs to be heated or maintained at a certain temperature. It is the first information of any heat trace project, because each fluid reacts differently to heat loss.
Maintenance temperature
The temperature that the operation needs to maintain in the line or equipment during operation. It is one of the most important data of the project, because it guides the sizing of the heating system and the thermal insulation.
Thermal maintenance x heating
Two different needs that are often confused. Thermal maintenance is keeping the line at operating temperature, compensating for heat loss. Heating is raising the temperature of the product in a defined time, which requires more detailed thermal analysis, involving dough, flow and power required.
Classified area
Location with risk of explosive atmosphere, due to the presence of flammable gases, fuels or dangerous products. In classified areas, the electrical components of the heating system need specification appropriate to the risk, and project security requirements change.
Isometric
Technical drawing that represents the pipeline route with its sections, curves and accessories. Along with photos and memorials, It is one of the documents that most accelerate the analysis of a thermal trace project.
ART (Technical Responsibility Note)
Document that formalizes the responsibility of a qualified professional for the project or service performed. In industrial heating projects, the requirement of ART is a recurring requirement and an indicator of the supplier's technical maturity.
Speaking the same language
Aligned vocabulary shortens meetings, avoids misunderstandings in proposals and speeds up the project.
